If a surgical wound or incision takes longer than 2 weeks to heal or has ‘opened up’ after the sutures were removed, it is likely a non-healing surgical wound. There are several different reasons surgical wounds can have delayed healing, including pressure, infection, retained sutures or swelling. It is important to tell your wound provider if you have any hardware in place near the wound as hardware infections can be a serious surgical complication.
